Barra da Tijuca is the longest beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with 18 Km of clear and tropical green water. Barra is frequented by refreshing waves inviting to surfing both for beginners and experienced surfers.

Barra of Tijuca, or simply Barra as locals say is Rio de Janeiro’s youngest neighborhood. It’s high socioeconomic level turned it into one of the fastest growing areas in the city.

BARRA DA TIJUCA AREA RIO DE JANEIRO

Barra de Tijuca also denominates an administrative region in which we find Barra de Tijuca as a neighbourhood along with some others like: Joá, Itanhangá, Camorim, Vargem pequena, Vargem Grande, Recreio dos Bandeirantes, Grumari.

Sports like Surf, Kite surfing and body boarding are often practiced there, with the chance to learn them in the numerous schools in the area. Championships (national and international) are often held at barra de tijuca many times during the year, also surfing.

You can get to Barra da Tijuca beach in many ways. The majority of buses don’t pass the whole beach extension, so if you want to go by bus, it will leave you on the backstreet and you have to walk a little bit. There are some vans that go to Barra as well, but if you want a safe bet, the best option is to take a cab or rent a car to go to Barra, since it’s a very big place. Vans: they pass through Copacabana beach, Ipanema, Leblon and downtown Rio. Just stick your hand out when they approach you and they’ll pick you up. The buses and vans take less time to get to Barra when they use LINHA AMARELA highway. This will save you about 20 minutes on the road.

BARRA DA TIJUCA NEIGHBOURHOOD RIO DE JANEIRO

Here is the largest convention center in Latin America, “Rio Centro”. The largest shopping mall too, “Barra Shopping”, with over 650 shops, and its own monorail system. Instead of supermarkets you have hypermarkets, with thousands of square feet. Add theme parks, -like “Rio Water Planet”, also the biggest water theme park in Latin America-, natural reserves with wild birds and alligators, preserved beaches with limited access to cars, and you start to get an idea of the possibilities.

BARRA DA TIJUCA BEACH RIO DE JANEIRO

An extension of Barra da Tijuca Beach is called Praia do Pepê. This name was given to the beach, cause Pepê was the nickname of a young boy selling beer, mineral water and home made, natural sandwiches at the beach as well as practicing many sports. One of them was hang gliding, from which he died some years ago while flying. As he was very popular, people decided to give his name to the small extension of the beach.

At the end of Barra da Tijuca is the quarter named Recreio dos Bandeirantes.

After that you have Prainha and Grumari beaches. Their perfect waves made them famous. They are on a biological reserve area, with restricted car parking spaces. Enjoy this between mountains-beauty of the nature on the week-days.

Recreio dos Bandeirantes is a neighbourhood of the western area of Rio de Janeiro. Just like all of the neighbourhoods of the western zone, is relatively new, but it already counts with the residence of 40.000 people.

It’s a middle to high class district neighbouring Barra da Tijuca, Camorim, Vargem Pequena, Vargem Grande, Grumari and Barra de Guaratiba, 45 km from Rio de Janeiro’s center.

RECREIO DOS BANDEIRANTES AND BARRA DA TIJUCA

Recreio dos Bandeirantes shares it’s coastline with Barra da Tijuca. Recreio dos Bandeirantes is located west of Barra, further away if you are coming from Rio’s center.

The urbanistic construction style of Recreio dos Bandeirantes differs substancially from that of Barra da Tijuca. While at Barra you will find very high buildings and skycrapers, at Recreio you will mainly see low buildings. Nevertheless you will find them pretty luxurious.

Recreio is a neighbourhood planned to bare an infraestructure to assure a high quality of life. The only proble is driving downtown, it can take you up to two hours.

RECREIO DOS BANDEIRANTES BEACH RIO DE JANEIRO

Recreio dos Bandeirantes beach starts right after Barra da Tijuca and ends at Pontal Rock. After Pontal Rock you will find Macumba Beach, Prainha Beach and Grumari Beach.

At Recreio dos Bandeirantes Beach the sun never get’s trapped behind sky high buildings, adding to this beach more hours of sun and beautyfull sunsets.

Recreio’s beach has a few spots absolutelly free from constructions, desserted areas that limit with the vegetation of it’s Ecological Reserve.

Recreio dos Bandeirantes beach is regularly frequented by surfers. It hosts a number of international tournaments of surf and bodyboarding.

Ther are to main surf spots at Recreio dos Bandeirantes beach. They are both located at the end of the beach, near “Pedra do Pontal”, Pontal Rock . The surf spots are “Posto 10″ and “Canto do Recreio”.

The municipality of Rio de Janeiro has taken the iniciative of creating a Suf neighbourhood to satisfy all the needs that te practice of this sport requires.

Recreio also counts with a famous skating rink located at Pedra do Pontal.

Grumari Beach shares it’s 4 km coastline with Naturist Abricó Beach. Abricó Beach is located at the beginning, occupying the 1st kilometer of extension.

There is a nudist area, Abricó Beach, Rio de Janeiro, located in the first 300 meters of Grumari, in a selvatic and protected area.

Rustic, Grumari Beach is located inside an Ambiental Protection Area (APA), surrounded by hills, rock formations, and restinga vegetation. Due to it’s location the place is only habitated by 150 people, including a fisherman colony.

Grumari beach, Rio de Janeiro, receives strong waves that always attract sufers. It’s a classic surf spot in Rio de Janeiro. At Grumari Beach are often held National and International Surf Championships.

SAMBODROMO RIO DE JANEIRO - SAMBODROME

Sambodromo is the Parade Stadium for Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival.

Sambódromo the world’s greatest parade stadium was built in 1984 and can hold nearly 100,000 people for its shows.

The Sambodromo is located on Av. Marquês de Sapucaí, also called Passarela Professor Darcy Ribeiro, at a neighbourhood called Cidade Nova at the northern area of the city. Another reference of the area is well known Praça Onze which is located at the beginning of the Avenue.

SAMBODROMO AT CARNIVAL TIME RIO DE JANEIRO

You can go to the Sambodromo at different times:

During the day, just to see what it looks like. And you can check out the City of Samba, and Carnaval Museum that are right besides the Samba Avenue.

During the technical trainnings of the Escolas the Samba during december, january and february right up to Carnival time. The Samba Schools have a time table for their rehearsals at Sambodromo during the weekends prior to Carnival. The show is really amazing (it’s like carnival but without the costumes) because you can get pretty close to the action, and because it’s free.

At the four days of Carnival if you have purchased your tickets. If you haven’t purchased your tickets it’s very likely you can still get in due to the resellers frenetic activity. Just be carefull not to get hazzled!

CARNIVAL PARADE AT SAMBODROMO RIO DE JANEIRO

You can go to Sambodromo in different ways:

Taxis will take you to right to the sector of the Sambodromo in which you have purchased your tickets.

You can also go by metro. The metro station you should get off if you are going to the even sections (sectors 2, 4, 6) of the Sambodromo is Praça Onze. From that station the Sambodromo is only 3 blocks away.

The metro station you should get off if you are going to the odds sections of the Sambodromo (sectors 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13) is Central. From that station the Sambodromo is only 700 meters away.

These neigbhourhoods of the southern part of Rio have their own metro station in which you can catch the metro: Copacabana, Botafogo and Flamengo. From Ipanema, Leblon you have to first catch the metro bus that takes you to the Copacabana metro station.

Buses will also leave you right at the Sambodromo. From the Southern neighbourhoods of Rio: Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, Botafogo and Flamengo you have to get on buses number: 121, 126, 127. Be aware that at Carnival time buses might change their routes.

SAMBODROME CARNIVAL 2009 RIO DE JANEIRO

So what really goes on at Sambodromo during the four days of Carnival?

It’s a competition between the “Escolas de Samba” of Rio de Janeiro to see who is the champion of the year.

The Escolas are divided into 6 categories. In each category you will find 12 Escolas (Samba Schools). The Escolas of the “Grupo Especial” and the “Grupo A” are the ones that actually parade in the 4 days of Carnival at Sambodromo (Group A, the first two days, and the Special Gruop in the last two days), because they are considered to be the finest.

There are a group of judges that analize the Escolas in more than 40 aspects to decide who gets the glory and who gets thrown out of the Special Group, so the competition is intense.

You can actually parade at the 4 days of Carnival with a costume. There are a number of companies that will arrange that for you. You can also contact the Escolas the Samba yourself.

PRAINHA BEACH RIO DE JANEIRO

Prainha Beach is located West of the city of Rio de Janeiro, passing Barra da Tijuca, Recreio dos Bandeirantes, Macumba Beach, but before arriving to Grumari.

This small beach between Mountains is considered by most the best surf spot in Rio de Janeiro.

PRAINHA RIO DE JANEIRO

You could reach Prainha Beach, with public transportation with the “Surf Bus”. It’s a bus specially prepared to take 30 passanger with their boards.

The itinerary of the Surf Bus is: Largo do Machado(Flamengo)- Botafogo – Copacabana - Ipanema – Leblon – São Conrado – Barra da Tijuca – Recreio – Macumba – Prainha. Leaves at 7h-10h-13h-16h.

You can call 8702-2837 to confirm a place and arrange a meeting point. The Surf Bus returns at 8:30h-11.30H-14:30h-17:30h.

PRAINHA SURF RIO DE JANEIRO

Prainha beach has food and beverage service. During weekends Prainha can get pretty crowded, but on weekdays is almost deserted.

Prainha beach is inserted and sourrounded by vegetation of Rio de Janeiro’s Rain Forest, the “Mata Atlantica”, at Grumari’s Ambiental Protection Area.

Leme is a small neighbourhood, a beach, a fortress and a Rock in the southern zone of Rio de Janeiro.

LEME BEACH RIO DE JANEIRO BESIDES COPACABANA

Leme beach shares it’s coastline with Copacabana. Leme is located at the beginning of the coastline, neighbouirng Urca towards the Guanabara Bay. Leme starts at the Pedra do Leme (Leme Rock) and reaches up to Av. Princesa Isabel (thats where Copacabana starts). Walking through the beach you won’t see the limit.

Leme, Rio de Janeiro, is a middle to High class residential area, neighbouiring Urca to one side, Botafogo on the back and Copacabana to the other side.

Leme Beach and Neighbourhood owe their names to the “Pedra de Leme”, (Leme’s Rock). This rock formation seen from above looks like a Leme (Helm).

LEME STONE RIO DE JANEIRO LOOKS LIKE A HELM FROM ABOVE

At Leme Rock, Rio de Janeiro, you will find a priviledged sightseeing spot of Leme beach and Copacabana beach, a pintoresc gastronomic center, and a famous fishing spot.

If you like fishing you should visit at any time the “Caminho dos Pescadores” (Fisherman’s Pathway), a platform constructed over and around Leme Rock where locals fish.

Leme’s Fortress, officially called “Forte Duque de Caxias”, can be visited on Saturdays, Sundays, and Hollydays.

ARPOADOR RIO DE JANEIRO

At the vertix, where the coasts of Copacabana and Ipanema meet, we find two beaches, a particular rock formation, and a pretty park.

The beaches are called “Praia do Diabo” (Do Diabo Beach), and “Praia do Arpoador” (Arpoador Beach), the rock is called “Pedra do Arpoador” (Arpoador Rock) , and the Park “Parque Garota de Ipanema” (Girl from Ipanema Park).

Arpoador Stone, Rio de Janeiro, is a rock formation that comes out directly from the Atlantic Ocean.

Whale hunting with harpoons was very common at this area. It was done some time ago by the indians, and continued by the Portuguese.

From this historical fact derives the name “Pedra do Arpoador”, in english (harpooner’s rock, Rio de Janeiro).

ARPOADOR STONE RIO DE JANEIRO

Arpoador Rock, Rio de Janeiro gives it’s name to Arpoador beach. The beach is on the right side of the rock (if we are standing on it looking at the sea). On the left side of the rock we have do Diabo beach.

ARPOADOR BEACH RIO DE JANEIRO

Arpoador beach, Rio de Janeiro, occupies the first 800 meters of a coastline that includes Ipanema and Leblon.

Arpoador beach is a great viewpoint of the beaches of Ipanema y Leblon.

It’s a tranquil and beautyfulll beach commonly visited by families.

It’s also a very important surfing spot of the city of Rio de Janeiro.

DO DIABO BEACH ARPOADOR AREA RIO DE JANEIRO

On the left side of Arpoador’s Rock we find Do Diabo beach (Devil’s beach), Rio de Janeiro.

Praia do Diabo beach is situated between Copacabana and Ipanema. Despite being very small it has it’s own coastline in front, and wide open, to the sea. This particularity makes it very suitable for surfing.

You enter Do Diabo beach through a small green park where you can enjoy a relaxing atmosphere and freezing cocounut water.

ARPOADOR GIRL FROM IPANEMA PARK RIO DE JANEIRO

Parque Garota de Ipanema, or Girl from Ipanema Park, Rio de Janeiro, is situated in front of do Diabo and Arpoador beaches, between Av. Francisco Bhering and Francisco Otaviano Street. This green Park consists of an area de 2,58 hectares, and can be visited on a daily basis from 6 am to 7 pm.

It’s a priviledged space for paisagism and the enjoyment of vegetation. It’s also a great sporting practice area, with several sports courts, such as a skate rink and rollerblading area. It also has a children playground area.

In 1994, Girl from Ipanema Park became part of the Ambiental Protection Area of Copacabana and Arpoador. Due to this proclamation, activities that affect the local environment are not allowed.

URCA is the denomination of a neighbourhood, a beach and a hill, mountain or morro.

Urca is the smallest neighbourhood of Rio de Janeiro, but in it’s perimeter we find three hills, three beaches, two fortresses and the mythicall Sugar Loaf complex.

The neighbourhood is situated at the limit where the Guanabara Bay and the Atlantic Ocean meet. Urca neighbours Botafogo towards the Guanabara Bay and Copacabana towards the Atlantic Ocean.

URCA NEIGHBOURHOOD RIO DE JANEIRO

MOUNTAINS AT URCA AREA RIO DE JANEIRO BRAZIL:

The three hills, mountains, or as the Carioca call them “Morros” are: Morro da Urca, Mount Urca, or Urca Mountain, (that’s where the name of the neighbourhood comes from), Morro Pão de Açúcar, in english the Sugar Loaf Mountain (with it’s telesferical ride), and Morro Cara de Cao (which in english means dog face mountain).

Mount Urca and Mount Babilonia, (the last one situated in neighbouring Copacabana), are two rock formations very suitable for mountain climbing at begginner and intermediate level. On the way up you can admire the beautyfull scenery of the Guanabara Bay, the Sugar Loaf, the Atlantic Ocean and the beaches of the area.

URCA BEACHES RED BEACH RIO DE JANEIRO

BEACHES AT URCA RIO DE JANEIRO BRAZIL:

The three beaches (praias in portuguese) found at this pintoresc area are: Praia de Urca (Urca beach), receiving the calm waters of the Guanabara Bay), Praia de Fora (Outside beach), and Praia Vermelha (Red beach). The last two beaches are set at the Atlantic Ocean, and are apt for swimming. The beaches are an obligated visit upon mountain climbing, trekking, biking, or after visiting the Sugar Loaf.

URCA RIO DE JANEIRO BRAZIL – HISTORICAL RELEVANCE:

Urca is also well known due to it’s historical relevance. It was in this area where Estácio de Sá founded Rio de Janeiro. Historians situate the exact spot at Praia de Fora Beach, at the base of Mountain or Morro Cara de Cao.

This is also the reason why we find at the base of the Sugar Loaf Mountain the “Sao Joao fortress”.

URCA SUGAR LOAF MOUNTAIN COMPLEX RIO DE JANEIRO

URCA, Rio de Janeiro, has the privilege of being the home of the famous “SugarLoaf Mountain”.

The Sugar Loaf complex consists of a telesferical visit to Mount Urca, as a first stop, and to Mount Sugarloaf as second and final stop. At the first stop in Urca Hill you will find restaurants that are open all day long. At Sugar Loaf Hill (much taller than Urca Hill), you will find an amazing view of the city of Rio de Janeiro.

Leblon neighbourhood Rio de Janeiro: Leblon is a well known residence area in Rio de Janeiro. The neighbourhood still maintains it’s quiet and tranquil atmosphere on the streets and at the beach.

Lower Leblon Area (Baixo Leblon) is more animated, epecially at nights, near Rua (Street) Dias Ferreira. Restaurantes, bars and apart-hoteles are all along this area.

Upper Leblon Area (Alto Leblon) is almost strictly residential. This hilly area on the West side of Leblon is a favorite spot for Rio’s rich and famous. There are many houses, mansions and posh apartments. Some streets are still cobblestone.

LEBLON BEACH RIO DE JANEIRO

Leblon Beach Rio de Janeiro (Praia do Leblon): Is right beside Ipanema, in the same coastline, and is one of the most tranquil beaches in the south area (zona sul) of Rio de Janeiro. In comparisson to Copacabana or Ipanema, we can say its a family beach.

Leblon beach and neighbourhood, Rio de Janeiro, starsts right after the “Jardim de Alá Channel”. This small channell unites the “Rodrigo Freitas Lagoon“ to the Atlantic Ocean, thus separating Leblon from Ipanema.

LEBLON AREA RIO DE JANEIRO BRAZIL

So Leblon, Rio de Janeiro, is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the front, the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon on the back, Ipanema on one side and the Morro dos Irmaos (twin brothers hill or peak) on the other side at the end of Leblon Beach.

The name Leblon arises from the fact that this area was once owned by Frenchmen “Charles Le Blond”, owner of the fishing company Aliança. Afterwards he sold it to José de Seixas Magalhães, a Portuguese buisnessman.

LEBLON TWIN BROTHERS PEAK VIEW

There is a sight seeing spot at the end of the beach (on the opposite side of Ipanema where Avenida Niemeyer starts) called “Mirante do Leblon”. It’s up on a small monticle, and it’s a great place to take pictures and get a look at the hole coastline, while drinking coconut water.

Putting an end to the Leblon beach coastline (always on the opposite side of Ipanema), we have the “Morro Dois Irmãos”, one of the many charming and caracteristic mountains of Río de Janeiro. “Irmãos” stands for “brothers” in portuguese, and gets that name due to the to very similar twin peaks of this “morro”, hill. You could visit this mount and take panoramic pictures of the city.

The Sugar loaf Mountain complex includes two hills or morros as the carioca’s call them.

The shortest hill is named Morro da Urca, and it’s the first stop of the cable cars. Morro da Urca is 224 meters tall. This is where you find the restaurant, and the amphitheater.

The Sugarloaf Mountain itself is 395 meters tall and is the final stop of the telesferical ride.

The Sugar Loaf Mountain complex, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, also offers the posibility of doing some trekking. There are two official trekking lanes open -at the top and at the base of the hills.

At the base of Morro da Urca, or Urca hill, you will find a very enjoyable trekking path called “Pista Cláudio Coutinho”, or Claudio Coutinho’s Lane. It’s a lane that goes along the base of the Urca Mountain. As you go along you will be able to appreciate some small monkeys and typicall Brazilian flora.

About one million people visit the Sugar loaf Mountain, Rio de Janeiro, every year. You reach it by Av. Pasteur, it’s just 10 minute away from Copacabana, and a half hour ride from the rest of the southern neighobourhoods of Rio de Janeiro: Botafogo, Flamengo, Leblon and Ipanema.

The Sugar Loaf mountain is located at Urca neighbourhood, one of Rio’s most pintoresc neighborhoods. With six squares and only 16 streets, it is home to one of Rio’s most famous postcards, the Sugarloaf (Pão de Açúcar).

In this neighoburhood there are some fine attractions like the art-deco houses from the early 20th century and the old Casino on the beach, all of these surrounded by the beautyfull Guanabara Bay. A few artists live here, including singer Roberto Carlos (known as the King in Brazil, like Elvis in the U.S.).

In Urca, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, we also find three beaches of Rio de Janeiro, these are: Praia Vermelha at the base of the Sugar Loaf Mountain, an ideal stop after the cable car tour, Praia de Fora and Praia da Urca.

Urca has an important historical role, this is where Estácio de Sá founded Rio de Janeiro in 1565. The oldest construction still standing is the São João Fortress, dating of 1618. It was renovated in 1872, in order to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Brazil’s independence. It’s 15 cannons were installed for the ocation.

Christ blessing the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with open arms. It can be seen from most South Side neighborhoods of Rio de Janeiro: Copacabana, Ipanema, Botafogo, Flamengo. The Christ Blessing Statue stands on the Corcovado Mountain, which is 710 m tall (about 2,400 feet). The Statue of Christ stands 30 meters high (100 feet), covered in a mosaic of soapstone. On its base there is a small chapel.

The original design of the Christ the Redeemer Statue was done by a Brazilian, named Heitor da Silva Costa. He was also the engineer in charge of the construction. He shared the project with Frenchmen sculptor Paul Landowski, who took almost two years working on the hands and face. It was built from 1926 to 1931, with funds raised from donations.

This spot offers a 360° view to Rio Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Come on a day with clear sky, and postcard photos are guaranteed.

If you go on your own, take a bus or taxi to Rua Cosme Velho, 513, at Cosme Velho neighbourhood. This is where you buy tickets for the small train that goes uphill.

The train ride up the Corcovado mountain to visit the Christ the Redeemer Statue is a plus, as it goes through a nature trail. And the special charm is that Estrada de Ferro do Corcovado was originally built in 1882 by Emperor Dom Pedro II.

The Christ blessing statue is located in Cosme Velho, a southern neighbourhood of Rio de Janeiro, at the base of the Corcovado and Dona Marta mountains occupying the higher area of the Rio Carioca Valley.

The Statue is at the top of the Corcovado Mountain, one of the peaks of the Carioca mountain range (along with Dona Marta, Santa Teresa and Dos Prazeres mountains), and inside the Tijuca Forest, the biggest urban forest in the world.

Corcovado mountain is a granite vertical rock formation which is apt for hiking and mountain climbing, counting with more than 50 trails open.

BOTAFOGO RIO DE JANEIRO BRASIL AT GUANABARA BAY

Botafogo is the name of a neighbourhood, a beach and a cove (or inlet).

One of Rio’s most traditional areas, Botafogo neighbours Flamengo and Downtown to the north, and Copacabana and Ipanema down south.

The neighborhood was named after João Pereira de Souza Botafogo, one of the first residents in the area.

Botafogo is a middle to high class neighbourhood of the city of Rio de Janeiro. It’s specially known for hosting two of the biggest shopping centers of Rio.

RioSul, one of Rio’s major shopping malls is here, right across from Rio Shopping with a number of outlets and discount stores. Keep a note in your agenda for a rainy day in Rio.

It’s also well known due to the educational, medical, and buissness institutions that are at the area.

BOTAFOGO BEACH RIO DE JANEIRO AT GUANABARA BAY

Botafogo is an urban beach located at the shores of the Guanabara Bay. The Botafogo Beach, Rio de Janeiro, receives the contstant visit of yachts and sailboats. Keep in mind that one of Rio de Janeiro’s finest yacht clubs is located at Urca, right beside Botafogo Beach.

Botafogo Beach is one of Rio’s favorite places for outdoor shows.

The Botafogo Cove, Rio de Janeiro, has an extension of 700 meters. This area has a priviledged view of the Sugar Loaf and the Guanabara Bay. The Botafogo inlet has a bycicle and running path along it’s side that unites Flamengo to Copacabana.

MARACANA STADIUM RIO DE JANEIRO BRAZIL:

Maracana Stadium was inaugurated on the 24th of july of 1950. It was originally called “Estadio Municipal”, but in 1964, it received it’s actual name, “Mário Filho”, in honour to the sports jornalist and founder of the “Journal dos Sports”.

Anyways, for the locals it has always been “Estadio Maracana”, (Maracana Stadium), and most probably will remain the same. The name Maracana comes from a bird of the region and also because thats the name of the neighobourhood where the stadium is located.

The world’s largest football stadium, Maracana, was built for World Cup IV, that was held in Rio in 1950. Brazil unfortunately lost to Uruguay that year, but today it’s the only nation in the world to hold 5 titles.

MARACANA STADIUM ACCESS:

The Maracana Stadium is located in the northern part of Rio de Janeiro. It’s access is very easy due to the metro and bus stations that are right in front of the building.

Football is the national sport in Brazil, and the Maracana stadium is often filled to capacity with more than 90,000 people when there is a major match. The official record is of 183,341 spectators in 1969.

At Maracana Stadium is where Pelé scored his 1,000th goal.

In the 1950 world cup, there were allegedly more than 200.000 people at Maracana Stadium. Today, after various reforms due to FIFA regulations, the Maracana stadium has a capacity of 75.000 people seated. You are welcome to watch a match at Maracana Stadium if you come during the football season.

MARACANA STADIUM VISITS – TOURS:

You can visit Maracana Football Stadium from 9 am to 5 pm, every day, excpet on game days, where the stadium is closed for visits, 4 hours before the games.

The tour for the Maracana Satdium starts right at the entrance of the stadium, in the “calçada da fama”, “walk of fame”, a place where some of Brazilians most famous players have left their feet marks in cement. Inside the Maracana Stadium, you will find painels and murals with the history of the stadium, it’s construction details, the history of world and brasilian football.

After that you can check out the panoramic view of the Maracana Stadium. The visit ends up in the field with a previous check out of the locker and warm up areas.

Maracana Stadium is also used for mega-shows every now and then, and artists like Frank Sinatra, Paul McCartney and the Rolling Stones have already performed here. Next door to it are Maracanãzinho, a smaller bowl with a capacity of 20,000 and the Olympic Stadium Célio de Barros, often used for international competitions.
